Every believer knows what it is like to battle with sin.
While we often blame our circumstances, other people, or even the devil, James takes us beneath the surface and reveals that the greatest battle is not around us—it is within us.
The war against sin begins in the heart, where selfish desires, pride, and divided loyalties compete with God’s will.
Yet this passage is not one of condemnation; it is an invitation to experience the transforming grace of God.
James lays out God’s order for victory. He does not tell us to resist the devil first. Instead, he says, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Before we stand against the enemy, we must first humble ourselves and surrender our fives to the Lord. Only then can we walk in the authority and strength that comes from living under Christ’s rule.
Victory over sin is not achieved by trying harder or relying on our own determination. It comes through repentance, humility, daily dependence on God’s grace, and the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.
The battle against sin is won as we draw near to God, allowing Him to transform our hearts and shape us into the likeness of Jesus Christ.
The answer to the battle isn’t more willpower—it is surrender.

Submit yourself to God
Humble yourself before him and place your life under Christ’s authority.
Resist the devil
Stand firm against temptation through the strength and truth god provides.
He will flee from you
This is God’s promise as we stand in submission to Christ – the enemy has no choice but to flee.
Final thought
As we live under Christ’s authority, we can stand in his victory. May we be a people who don’t simply hear God’s word but live it every day through the power of the Holy Spirit
